New Jersey Loan Commission record book, 1784-1792.

Consists of a record book and seven abstracts of subscriptions towards loans to the United States government from citizens of New Jersey dating from 1784-1791. The office of James Ewing, Commissioner of Loans for New Jersey, kept these records. Entries in both the record book and abstracts list the names of subscribers, the amounts, and dates of transactions. Subscribers included members of the Ewing, Boudinot, Condict, Ogden, and Newbold families.

After the Revolution, the new national government was deeply in debt, and it created new taxes and borrowed money from individual citizens. In the 1780s, JamesEwing was appointed Commissioner for Loans to the United States in New Jersey. He became mayor of Trenton from 1797-1803 and helped found the Trenton Library and Academy.
